From November 20 to 24, 2025, a delegation of Kazakhstani scholars visited Shanghai, marking an important step in strengthening international cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence and digital social sciences and humanities research. The purpose of the visit was to enhance academic dialogue and exchange experience in advanced analytical tools and interdisciplinary studies.
The delegation from Kazakhstan was led by Sholpan Zhamanbalayeva, Deputy Director General for Science at the Institute of Philosophy, Political Science and Religious Studies (IPhPR), who played a key role in building scientific communication and institutional partnerships. The delegation also included Rustem Mustafin, Head of the Center for Digital Social Sciences, who oversees the development of digital methods in humanities research, as well as Madina Mansurova, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and Professor at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, whose work covers a wide range of tasks related to the modeling of complex systems.
During the trip, IPhPR representatives met with leading experts from Fudan University—one of China’s largest scientific centers, known for its research in data science, artificial intelligence, and the integration of digital technologies with the humanities. Special emphasis was placed on meetings with university experts, including Professor Yanwei Fu, a recognized specialist in machine learning, computer vision, and few-shot learning.
During the discussions, the parties explored opportunities for applying modern AI technologies in social sciences and humanities research, particularly in working with text corpora, digital archives, and sociological data sets. Professor Fu highlighted the importance of AI interpretability, which makes intelligent algorithms transparent and well-grounded tools for analysis.
As a result of the visit, both sides agreed to continue developing joint research projects, exchanging expertise, and strengthening institutional cooperation between scientific centers of Kazakhstan and China.
