On March 19, 2019, the first head of modern sovereign Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, signed a decree on the resignation of the president at his own request. Since March 20, 2019, Chairman of the Senate Kassym-Jomart Kemelevich Tokayev has become the current President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, according to the Constitution. According to the Constitution, he was supposed to be the head of the country until the end of the elected term of the previous president, that is, until April 2020. Due to the prevailing political situation in the country at that time, when opposition and other civil forces called for free, competitive presidential elections in Kazakhstan, on April 9, 2019, in his televised address to the people of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced the holding of early elections, which took place on June 9, 2019.
